4 x Framed Prints – John Sell Cotman, River Greta Series, A cohesive set of four reproduction prints after watercolours by John Sell Cotman, a leading figure of the Norwich School and one of Britain’s most accomplished early 19th-century landscape artists. These works focus on the River Greta in North Yorkshire, a recurring subject in Cotman’s oeuvre, celebrated for its geological drama and romantic solitude. Each print is presented in a gilt frame with white multi-layered mounts, glazed for preservation and decorative display. 1. “The Marl Pit” (c.1809–1810) A quarry scene with cattle and chalk cliffs, rendered in muted tones and broad washes. A rare Cotman subject, held in the Norwich Castle Museum collection.2. “On the River Greta, Yorkshire” A riverside view with rocks in the foreground, a single-arched bridge mid-scene, and trees beyond. Based on Cotman’s original watercolour in the British Museum.3 .”Greta Bridge” A historic stone bridge in County Durham, shown from the bank with flowing water and distant hills. This version may derive from Cotman’s 1805 watercolour held at the British Museum. 4. River Greta composition, possibly from Cotman’s Greta Woods series, which includes multiple views of the river and surrounding terrain. 40 x 40cm (Loc 242)
