Lot 619: * Table Diderot in Louis XVI Style
Table Diderot in Louis XVI Style The Diderot table is an exemplary Louis XVI style piece in solid cherrywood, embodying the Neoclassical ideals of balance, clarity and rational construction that defined late eighteenth century French menuiserie. Its expansive circular top is crafted from segmented cherrywood veneer with a cross banded border and fine ebony style stringing arranged in a subtle geometric cross, all finished in a warm hand polished patina that accentuates the precision of the radial and cross grain cuts. A deep, straight edged apron reinforces the architectural sobriety of the design, deliberately rejecting Rococo curvature in favour of linear geometry and the natural beauty of the timber. Four tapered square section legs with vertical fluting rise to gilt brass gadrooned collars and terminate in matching brass sabots, giving the table a refined, elevated stance. Measuring 75 cm high and 140 cm in diameter, it stands as a noble tribute to Enlightenment craftsmanship and the intellectual rigour associated with Denis Diderot. [Loc FR861]
