Lot 1255: * Commode Gerbou in Louis XVI Style is a sophisticated realisation of Neoclassical ébénisterie
Commode Gerbou in Louis XVI Style is a sophisticated realisation of Neoclassical ébénisterie, characterised by a break-front architectural facade and a masterclass in geometric parquetry. Handcrafted from solid cherrywood, the chest of drawers is elevated by extraordinary rosewood and violetwood inlaid work, showcasing a vibrant contrast between the warm fruitwood and the deep, dark framing veneers. The relevance of the “Gerbou” designation lies in its connection to the prestigious lineage of Parisian master cabinetmakers who transitioned away from Rococo curves toward a more disciplined, “break-front” geometry. This style is defined by a rigorous focus on proportion and symmetry, where the central section of the facade projects slightly forward to create an architectural rhythm typical of the late 18th-century French Enlightenment. The facade is divided into six distinct panels, with the lateral sections exhibiting burled wood reserves and the central panels featuring a complex lozenge-pattern (diamond) parquetry. This intricate woodwork is bordered by delicate barber-pole stringing in ebony and boxwood, while the structure is crowned with a matching solid cherrywood top that follows the undulating lines of the facade. Adorned with precision-cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts—including circular guilloché-pattern pull rings and bronze chutes with draped Neoclassical consoles—the piece maintains a sense of lightness by resting on four elegant cabriole legs finished with brass sabots. Standing as a definitive statement of French savoir-faire, the Gerbou commode measures 32 inches (83 cm) in height, 44 inches (114 cm) in width, and 19 inches (50 cm) in depth.
