Lot 1219: * Louis XV Dubois Vitrine Cabinet in the Louis XV style is a virtuosic expression of mid-18th-century
Louis XV Dubois Vitrine Cabinet in the Louis XV style is a virtuosic expression of mid-18th-century French ébénisterie, characterized by the fluid, organic lines and luxurious materials that defined the height of the Rococo period. This model refers to a celebrated dynasty of 18th-century maîtres ébénistes (master cabinetmakers), most notably Jacques Dubois (1694–1763) and his son René Dubois, who were renowned for their high-luxury furniture commissioned by the French royalty and aristocracy. Handcrafted from a sophisticated combination of rosewood and violet wood, this monumental vitrine features a dramatic arched pediment and two expansive glass doors framed by undulating curves that mimic the naturalistic movement favoured by the royal court. The true hallmark of the Dubois model is its masterful use of pictorial marquetry; the lower door panels are decorated with complex floral bouquet inlays rendered in contrasting precious woods and set within a diamond-pattern parquetry field bordered by rhythmic rope-twist or boxwood stringing. The architectural volume is further enhanced by book-matched violet wood veneers on the side panels, carefully aligned in a radiating sunburst or V-shape pattern to showcase the natural grain. The bottom rail features a deep serpentine apron that transitions into four slender cabriole legs to emphasize the signature S-curve silhouette. Elevated by custom-cast ormolu (gilt-bronze) mounts, the cabinet includes elongated bronze espagnolettes with scrolled acanthus leaves on the front corners, a magnificent asymmetrical rocaille motif at the centre of the apron, and refined bronze sabots. Expertly finished in a traditional waxed patina, the piece allows the rich, multi-tonal hues of the rosewood and violet wood to shine with a soft, historical luster. This masterpiece measures approximately 148 cm (58 inches) in height, 85 cm (33 inches) in width, and 38 cm (15 inches) in depth.
