Lot 1208: * A pair of Louis XVI chairs is a refined example of the masterful work of Georges Jacob
A pair of Louis XVI chairs is a refined example of the masterful work of Georges Jacob, the most prolific and celebrated French menuisier of the 18th century, who defined the neoclassical transition. Handcrafted from solid beechwood, the frame features a classic ribbon-twist (torus) moulding that elegantly encircles both the circular seat and the arched backrest—a signature detail of the period’s architectural refinement. This architectural precision is balanced by four turned and fluted arrow feet, showcasing the vertical channelling and tapered silhouette characteristic of the neoclassical “Return to Antiquity.” Consistent with the highest standards of French savoir-faire, the seat and backrest are traditionally upholstered using helical steel springs and hand-stitched horsehair (crin piqué) to provide a durable, tailored profile that resists sagging. This specific model is finished in a sophisticated Patrimoine réchampis cuivré—a hand-painted, distressed grey finish with copper highlights—which emphasises the architectural depth of the ribbon carvings and the fluted legs. The chair is expertly finished in a luxury floral damask, featuring a rich, textured pattern of metallic botanical motifs against a dark slate background to perfectly harmonise with the regal, hand-painted frame. Each chair measures 36 inches (92 cm) in height, 20 inches (52 cm) in width, and 19 inches (49 cm) in depth.
