Lot 1158: * A pair of Louis XV/XVI Transition Style Fauteuils
Sold for: £700
A pair of Louis XV/XVI Transition Style Fauteuils, A distinguished pair of armchairs, or fauteuils, is a refined reproduction in the Transition style, capturing the pivotal shift from the flamboyant Rococo of Louis XV to the structured Neoclassicism of Louis XVI. The Dite ‘Michalon’ designation identifies a model inspired by the celebrated menuisier Louis Delanois, a pioneer of the classical revival who was among the first to introduce rectilinear forms to the French court. The entire frame and structure are hand-carved from solid beechwood, showcasing superior traditional craftsmanship. The design features a rounded, gently curving backrest in the medallion shape, providing a sophisticated counterpoint to the more architectural elements of the frame. This is elegantly contrasted by the fluid whiplash armrest supports, a graceful lingering influence of the earlier Rococo period. The chair stands on turned and fluted arrow feet, a quintessential tapered leg design that defines the emerging Louis XVI aesthetic. Ensuring a perfect balance of grace and longevity, the chairs are traditionally upholstered with a steel-sprung system and covered in a luxurious, durable mohair velvet. Measuring 94 cm in height, 67 cm in width, and 56 cm in depth (37″ x 26″ x 22″), this pair achieves a rare harmony of comfort and classical sobriety.
