Lot 1134: * A pair of Louis XVI Style Lerouge Armchairs
A pair of Louis XVI Style Lerouge Armchairs This stately pair of Lerouge armchairs represents a faithful high-quality reproduction of the Neoclassical works by the eighteenth-century master menuisier Jean-Baptiste Lerouge. Historically significant as the master to whom the legendary Georges Jacob was apprenticed, Lerouge was a prominent Parisian craftsman received in 1749. The architecture of these chairs is defined by the à la Reine style, featuring a flat back intended for formal placement against a wall. The backrest is framed by elegant lateral columns topped with decorative pinnacles, a refined detail that adds vertical architectural height characteristic of high-end Louis XVI design. The frames are meticulously handcrafted from solid beechwood and finished with hand-applied gold leaf to accentuate the precision of the carving. Embracing the goût grec (Greek taste) of the period, the design replaces Rococo curves with geometric order and architectural symmetry, featuring tapered and fluted legs that mimic classical pillars. The seat rails are adorned with meticulous decorative friezes, typically including ribbon-twist details or rosettes at the connecting joints. For superior comfort, the chairs utilise traditional old-world construction, featuring helical springs and leaf-fibre trimming. They are sumptuously upholstered in Rhéa floral stripe lampas from the renowned French silk house Tassinari & Châtel, featuring a satin ground with vertical floral bands that perfectly complement the Neoclassical frame. Each armchair measures 90 cm in height, 67 cm in width, and 53 cm in depth (35″ x 26″ x 20″).
