Lot 2028: * A unique three-panel folding room screen is a striking example of antique decoupage

A unique three-panel folding room screen is a striking example of antique decoupage, featuring a comprehensive collection of original Vanity Fair “Spy” cartoons expertly arranged on solid wood panels. The piece showcases dozens of colour lithographs primarily illustrated by Sir Leslie Ward (pseudonym “Spy”) during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, depicting a diverse array of prominent Victorian and Edwardian figures, including military officers, judges, and statesmen in a structured grid pattern. The nature-inspired aesthetic is enhanced by larger central scenes—such as hunting parties—surrounded by individual character portraits, all unified by a warm, amber-toned vintage varnish patina. Joined by robust metal hinges that allow the screen to be positioned at various angles, the structure displays characterful signs of age, including minor lifting of the decoupage edges and surface abrasions to the frame consistent with its antique status. Measuring approximately 170 cm to 180 cm in height with a total extended width of roughly 150 cm to 165 cm, this screen serves as both a functional room divider and a rich historical archive of British social history.
